PAUL ANNACONE TO HEADLINE 2014 TPA CONFERENCE

Former coach of Sampras and Federer heading to Toronto on Feb. 20

Toronto, November 8, 2013 – Tennis Canada announced Friday that highly-respected coach and former professional tennis player Paul Annacone will be the headlining guest speaker at the 2014 Tennis Professionals Association (TPA) Conference, to be held at the Centre of Excellence at Rexall Centre in Toronto on February 20. Annacone’s visit also coincides with the TPA’s 10th anniversary celebrations, which will be marked at the conference.

“We are very excited to be bringing Paul Annacone to the TPA Conference next year,” said Ari Novick, director of coaching and competition development, Tennis Canada. “We’ve had many strong guest speakers over the past few years and we are so pleased to be continuing that trend ten-fold with Annacone, especially at the same time the TPA is celebrating 10 successful years. With his immense coaching talent and experience, we know he will provide everyone at the conference with a truly valuable learning experience.”

Holding career-high rankings of world No. 12 in singles and No. 3 in doubles, Annacone reached the height of his playing career in the mid-1980s. He captured the 1985 Australian Open doubles title with Christo van Rensburg and was a three-time singles titlist at tournaments in Brisbane, Los Angeles, and Vienna. Retiring from the pro circuit in 1993, the American proceeded to make a name for himself as one of the world’s top coaches. He was the longtime coach of 14-time Slam champion Pete Sampras and also instructed Tim Henman before joining Roger Federer’s team from 2010-2013. Annacone also has served in the USTA’s High Performance program and was a head coach for the Lawn Tennis Association, where he also acted as Great Britain’s Davis Cup captain for two years.

Dedicated to growing the profession of tennis coaching in Canada, the TPA was introduced by Tennis Canada in 2004 to assist the nation’s certified instructors, coaches, and club professionals, and its membership has grown each year to over 2,800 people. The TPA will be celebrating its 10th anniversary next year, and membership renewals for 2014 opened on November 1.
